PSP Sports, based in Manhattan, works with over 100 professional sports franchises across the four major U.S. sports leagues. Recently, we partnered with PSP, led by NYC muralist Valentino Mikalef, to add life and color to their Manhattan office. Valentino, a born-and-raised New Yorker and sports fan, was thrilled to take on this project. Not only was his goal to create a mural that pays tribute to NYC but also to create mural that embodies NYC sports through legendary sports moments.
A Mural That Captures New York’s Sports Legacy
Valentino didn’t just paint a mural—he captured New York’s sports history. Clearly, his design combines the teams he grew up cheering for and that passion shined through. Valentino used a collage style to merge New York’s sports teams and famous moments with classic NYC imagery, like the skyline and I Love New York logo. Each section of the mural represents moments that are unforgettable to New York sports fans.
Legendary Sports Moments Included in the Mural
Valentino included several legendary sports moments that mean a lot to New York fans. These moments include famous athletes and unforgettable plays. Here’s what you’ll find in the mural:
- The historic meeting of Doc Gooden, Darryl Strawberry, and Mike Tyson, where Tyson playfully pretends to throw a punch at Gooden, creating an iconic photo of three NYC sports legends.
- Joe Namath’s legendary exit from Super Bowl III in 1969, holding up a #1 to celebrate the New York Jets’ victory.
- Stephane Matteau’s famous goal in 1994 that sent the New York Rangers to the Stanley Cup finals.
- Derek Jeter’s iconic jump-throw from the 1998 ALCS, a move that’s instantly recognizable to Yankees fans.
- David Tyree’s “helmet catch” in Super Bowl XLII, one of the most unforgettable moments in Giants history.
- Last, but not least, the 1981 celebration of the New York Islanders after winning the Stanley Cup.
Each part of the mural has deep meaning, capturing the spirit of New York and its sports heroes.
