Creating a Meaningful Mural for an Office: Aids Health Foundation’s New Manhattan Clinic

Creating a Custom Interior Mural for Aids Health Foundation’s New Manhattan Clinic

When the Aids Health Foundation (AHF) expanded its services with a new healthcare clinic in Manhattan, they wanted the design of the space to reflect the clinic’s mission and the rich history of activism in New York City. To achieve this, they decided on a custom interior mural. The mural would inspire and connect with both patients and staff. Without a doubt, we were honored to collaborate on this project. We were excited to create something that would embody the foundation’s core values through vibrant imagery.

For this mural, the AHF team wanted to celebrate both the artistic legacy of New York and the powerful activism surrounding the fight against AIDS. They specifically requested that two iconic figures be central to the design: Keith Haring and Marsha P. Johnson. Keith Haring, a world-renowned artist known for his colorful and socially conscious murals. Many of which advocated for AIDS awareness and LGBTQ+ rights. Marsha P. Johnson, a key figure in the gay rights movement, was a trailblazer in her advocacy for marginalized communities. And a vital part of the LGBTQ+ and AIDS activism in New York.

To honor these figures, we placed them prominently in the mural. Then we added elements representing the Chelsea neighborhood. Chelsea, home to many artists and activists, has a strong connection to both Haring and Johnson. And we wanted to capture that history. The mural features bold color blocks, abstract designs, and eye-catching lettering. Clearly creating a lively and modern aesthetic that feels right at home in Manhattan.

In addition to honoring these figures, the mural incorporates AHF’s five core values. “Patient-Centered,” “Fight for What’s Right,” “Nimble,” “Out of the Closet,” and “Healthcare for All.” Creating a visual reminder of the foundation’s mission. By blending the words with the imagery, we created a mural that not only adds beauty to the space but also serves as a constant source of inspiration. For everyone who enters the clinic.

Brand Collaborations

The collaboration on this custom interior mural was incredibly rewarding. Throughout the process, the AHF team provided input and ideas that helped shape the final design. Despite managing the grand opening of the clinic, they remained actively involved, ensuring the mural reflected their vision and values. The result is a vibrant and engaging piece of art that enhances the office environment, creating an inviting and meaningful space for patients and staff alike.

This mural does more than just brighten up the walls of the clinic—it creates a sense of place, community, and history. Patients walk in are greeted with colorful, uplifting artwork that sets a positive tone and makes the clinic feel like an integral part of the neighborhood. It transforms the clinic from a functional healthcare facility into a space that reflects the lives and struggles of the community it serves.

Results

We’re proud to have played a role in this project. The custom interior mural at Aids Health Foundation’s Manhattan clinic is more than just decoration; it’s a celebration of the people, history, and values that continue to inspire the fight against AIDS and LGBTQ+ rights. This is what makes custom murals so powerful—they tell stories, inspire action, and create connections that resonate long after the paint dries.
